In Gabor Turi’s case, his college friends’ tastes helped him find his way into a successful career that blended a love of jazz with journalism, civil service, academia, and now a major book project supported by a Fulbright scholarship.

During my stay as a Fulbright research scholar in the US, I was invited to a Thanksgiving dinner by Andreas Scherrer, a concert agent, owner of Company of Heaven who, ten years ago, moved to Harlem from Austria and married viola player Judith Insell. The following is a report on the event.

Swiss pianist Irene Schweizer called him “the father of German free jazz”, and there are other terms, like “Teutonic”, “martial” that attempted to characterize his music and perso­nality. Anyhow, coming from the now legendary Wuppertal free circle, multi-reedman Peter Brötz­mann became one of the most active jazz musicians on the international jazz scene of the ‘80s adding to his image an entirely new dimension.

One of the basic issues in the development of contemporary jazz concerns the growing pro­portion of ethnic dialects which lend a special flavor to this universal form of musical ex­pression.

Though he is a citizen of a small country in Eastern Europe, the Hungarian bassist Aladár Pege, 44, is now making his considerable weight felt on the international jazz scene.
